The second edition of Whisky Live Beirut is set to take place from October 19-21, generating excitement among whisky enthusiasts across the region. This annual event celebrates the world of whisky, bringing together industry experts and whisky lovers alike. To kick off the festivities, a special masterclass was held on October 18 at Eau de Vie in Phoenicia Hotel Beirut, led by Rob Allanson, global ambassador of Whisky Live and the longest-serving editor of Whisky Magazine. The session aimed to dispel myths about whisky drinking and build anticipation for the three-day event.
Allanson humorously addressed a common misconception: “Someone once told me to add water to whisky slowly so as not to bruise it. But at 64% alcohol, nothing will hurt it!” He emphasized that adding water enhances the tasting experience by unlocking the long-chain esters, revealing the whisky’s full flavor.
During the masterclass, a select group of bloggers and journalists sampled four whiskies, including a 12-year Japanese blend by Nikka, a King Alexander III Scotch by The Dalmore, and two single malts from Kilchoman Islay and Jura Prophecy. Allanson highlighted that the belief that older whisky is better is fading. “Older and darker doesn’t necessarily mean better whisky,” he explained. “Young whisky can be fresh, exciting, and more versatile for blending.”
The whisky industry is evolving, with non-traditional producers from countries like Sweden, India, and Australia gaining recognition for high-quality whiskies. Allanson also noted the rapid growth of Irish whisky, which is currently the fastest-growing sector in the world, alongside the increasing popularity of American bourbon and rye.
Whisky Live Beirut will take place at Le Yacht Club Beirut, Zaitunay Bay, from 4-10 p.m. daily. The event offers visitors a chance to explore whiskies from 40 specialist producers through tastings, workshops, and masterclasses. For more information, visit the official Whisky Live website.
