Amanda Schmiege, senior director of spa and wellness at The Pearl Spa and Wellness UAE Collection (Four Seasons Dubai and Abu Dhabi), discusses the pivotal role of wellness in the tourism industry.

How significant is spa and wellness to the tourism industry?

The spa and wellness sector is crucial to the tourism industry, as travelers today are increasingly focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Consequently, this shift has propelled wellness tourism to new heights, with more people seeking destinations that offer exceptional spa experiences. Furthermore, soaring demand for relaxation, rejuvenation and health-oriented services highlights the importance of integrating these offerings into travel packages. This integration not only attracts travelers but also enhances travel experiences significantly. In summary, wellness tourism has undoubtedly become a cornerstone of the industry’s growth and allure.

In what ways do wellness offerings enhance a destination’s appeal to travelers?

Imagine arriving at a destination where you can effortlessly maintain your healthy routine, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable stay. Consequently, wellness offerings significantly enhance a destination’s appeal by allowing travelers to maintain their lifestyle while away. Furthermore, key pillars of well-being include quality sleep, supported by various healthy sleep options available at our locations. For example, our venues feature nutritious dining choices, ensuring guests have access to wholesome and delicious meals. Moreover, our gym offers extensive fitness options, catering to a variety of exercise preferences and needs. We also provide yoga mats in guest rooms for personal wellness routines, adding to the convenience. Overall, these comprehensive health-focused offerings ensure travelers enjoy a balanced and health-oriented experience. Therefore, the destination becomes more attractive and fulfilling, perfectly catering to their needs.

Have you noticed an increase in travelers who specifically seek wellness and spa experiences?

There’s a noticeable trend in travelers seeking wellness and spa experiences. Guests are increasingly interested in unique, exclusive options they can’t easily find elsewhere. For example, at The Pearl Spa and Wellness Jumeirah, we recently introduced floating sound meditation. Picture floating in our indoor pool, surrounded by serene sky views, immersed in a 60-minute sound-bathing session — it’s a profoundly relaxing experience unlike any other. These distinctive offerings not only rejuvenate but also enrich their overall stay, reflecting our commitment to providing unparalleled, transformative wellness journeys.

What factors do you think are driving the wellness trend?

I believe the rise of smartwatches and similar devices has significantly increased people’s interest in their health compared to previous generations. Consequently, the 2020s have seen greater awareness in and commitment to healthier lifestyles, partly because these devices make monitoring daily activities easier. Moreover, wellness is no longer seen as a luxury or occasional indulgence; it is becoming a regular part of daily routines. As a result, this shift in mindset is driving more travelers to seek out wellness and spa experiences to maintain their healthy habits even while away from home. Ultimately, it’s about integrating wellness seamlessly into their lives, wherever they are.

How has the profile of the wellness traveler changed in recent years?

The wellness traveler’s journey has undergone a remarkable transformation, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds. There’s a growing interest in wellness among younger generations and a trend towards family-oriented activities. At The Pearl Spa and Wellness Jumeirah, we introduced family private yoga, led by expert instructors in our serene garden or by the indoor pool. This also is an opportunity for families to unwind, connect and foster harmony together, creating a shared wellness experience.

Why is sustainability important to the future of wellness tourism?

Sustainability is crucial for the future of wellness tourism, linking environmental care with personal well-being. Consequently, more people seek spas and hospitality venues prioritizing natural resources and sustainable practices. Understanding that wellness varies among individuals, we provide diverse options to cater to different needs. Personally, as a frequent traveler, I prioritize destinations offering classes and gyms that fit my routine and promote quality sleep. Guests increasingly demand facilities that support their wellness goals, and we prominently feature these amenities. Ultimately, our goal is to create a holistic, sustainable experience that meets everyone’s expectations and enhances well-being.
