Elena Schwartz, GM of Taj Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Elena Schwartz, GM of Taj Jumeirah Lakes Towers, discusses the role of women in hospitality and how she is empowering them.

Do you believe that the hospitality industry in the Middle East offers the same opportunities to professionals of both genders?

The situation for women in the hospitality sector varies across the Middle East, with notable differences between countries. Leaders in countries like the UAE, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia have made significant strides toward gender equality, despite progress in many other nations.
The level of equality often depends on each country’s reforms and its unique cultural and legal context, influencing women’s opportunities. Notably, the UAE stands out as a leader in promoting gender equality in the hospitality sector. Consequently, women frequently hold prominent positions across various industries, supported by strong government initiatives aimed at increasing female workforce participation.

How are you empowering other women?

Taj is renowned for its inclusive and supportive culture, providing numerous opportunities for women in various roles. Specifically, at Taj Jumeirah Lakes Towers, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where equality and diversity are valued. Therefore, we offer support, mentorship, and guidance to young women through several platforms designed to empower them. As a mother of two, I strive to balance my professional responsibilities with parenting, ensuring both areas receive attention. Furthermore, the skills I have developed as a parent enhance my effectiveness and contribute positively to my work-life balance.

What do you hope to accomplish in your current position?

Our strategy for Taj JLT over the next few years focuses on talent retention, brand reputation and commitment to quality. Additionally, located in a bustling area with scenic views, we offer guests a blend of warm traditional hospitality and modern accommodations. Central to our approach is Paathya, our dedicated sustainability program, which will be integrated into every aspect of our operations. Ultimately, we aim to ensure that sustainability is at the core of everything we do, driving our long-term success.

What are your plans for the property?

Since its opening in December 2020, Taj JLT has quickly become a benchmark in the region, receiving recognition across various platforms. Consequently, we plan to diversify our F&B offerings to attract discerning guests and establish ourselves as the premier dining destination. Furthermore, our award-winning restaurants, bar and Paros, a scenic rooftop lounge on the 46th floor, offer stunning views of the marina skyline and Emirates Golf Club. With a fantastic future ahead, Taj JLT is committed to making a significant impact in the region, supported by a winning team dedicated to excellence and innovation.
