The essence of Jabal Akhdar with Indah Megayani of Jala Spa

Indah Megayani, Director of Spa Wellness (Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa)

Indah Megayani has over 20 years’ experience shaping award-winning spas worldwide. In this interview, she talks about capturing the essence of Jabal Akdar at Jala Spa & Wellness, where she is director.

How does the spa reflect the unique character of Jabal Akhdar?

When designing Jala Spa & Wellness, we aimed to create more than just a spa; we envisioned an oasis of vitality. Moreover, we wanted it to reflect Jabal Akhdar itself, a true representation of the green mountain’s natural beauty and abundant vitality.

Additionally, there’s a reason this place is called the green mountain; it is known for its clean air, natural springs and fertile soil. Damask roses, which produce some of the world’s purest and most sought-after rose water, are also grown here. We incorporate this rose water into some of our therapies through essential oils, enhancing the overall spa experience for our guests. Moreover, the colors and textures throughout Jala are inspired by the mountain, creating a serene space deeply rooted in Omani heritage.

Finally, at Jala Spa & Wellness, we welcome our guests to reconnect, rejuvenate and reimagine the spa experience uniquely.

How do the offerings of the spa allow guests to reconnect?

Jala isn’t just about treatments; it’s about creating a space where people can truly unwind, decompress and reconnect with themselves. We aim to achieve this through the elements of water, sound, touch and scent, carefully curated for maximum relaxation. Moreover, we’ve designed every aspect of the spa with this idea of reconnection in mind, drawing inspiration from our unique neighborhood. From the moment you step in, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere encouraging you to slow down, breathe deeply, and be present. This experience reflects the unhurried pace of life here in Jabal Akhdar, inviting guests to embrace the moment.

How do you envision the role of wellness in luxury hospitality evolving over the next decade?

Since I began my career, wellness has become an integral part of luxury travel, and this trend will continue growing. Moreover, I believe we’ll see this trend evolve in some really exciting ways, especially with technology playing a significant role.

Already, we are witnessing incredible innovations enhancing the wellness experience. I expect this acceleration to continue rapidly. However, what excites me most is how wellness is becoming more holistic, encompassing mental health, nutrition and sleep quality.

In the future, I envision certain hotels becoming true wellness destinations, where guests can completely reset and recharge on every level. Additionally, the local element will become increasingly important, with spas and wellness centers tapping into unique healing traditions and natural resources.

At Jala, we are passionate about this approach, and I believe it’s a trend that will continue to grow significantly.

What defines Omani clientele?

While we certainly welcome many Omani guests who deeply appreciate their traditions and culture, our clientele is wonderfully diverse. We host visitors from all over the world, each bringing their own unique preferences and expectations to the experience.

What unites our guests, I believe, is a desire for authentic, locally inspired experiences combined with world-class wellness offerings. Additionally, many are drawn to Jabal Akhdar for its unique environment and eagerly incorporate elements of this special place.

Our Omani guests recognize traditional therapies like hammams and local ingredients that honor their heritage, embracing these with pride. Equally, they also appreciate and embrace the benefits of our cutting-edge therapies and modern techniques, enhancing their overall experience.

What are your plans for the spa?

We plan to enhance Jala Spa & Wellness by deepening our connection to the local environment and expanding our wellness offerings. This includes introducing meditation, sound healing classes and wellness workshops, all while continuing to provide sustainable, holistic treatments. Our goal is to create a transformative, luxury experience rooted in the unique beauty of Jabal Akhdar.
