How the new working week will impact hospitality in the UAE

In a major step forward, the UAE started adopting a shorter working week, transitioning to four-and-a-half working days as of January 1, 2022, with Saturday and Sunday becoming the new weekend. HN sat with Naim Maadad, CEO and founder of Gates Hospitality, to discover the impact this is likely to have on the hospitality industry.

Do you believe it was the right decision to change the working week in the UAE?

The adjustment to the working week greatly helps commercial and financial institutions in the UAE that have strong business links or have headquarters in other parts of the world. There will be greater synchronization. Even travel will be aligned, and residents can take advantage and capitalize on the holidays thanks to this realignment.

What impact will the extended weekend have on family life?

With a two-and-a-half-day weekend, those who work can spend more quality time with their family and loved ones. As a result, the entertainment and hospitality sectors are likely witness greater footfall during this new weekend.

Do you believe other countries in the region will follow suit?

I hope so, but it is likely to take time, as each country needs to study the economic implications before launching such an initiative.
